Frequently asked questions

  • Do visitors need to download an app?
    No. They point their phone camera at the QR code and a web page opens with the audio player: play, pause, forward, back. Nothing to install, no account to create, no queue at the desk to pick up a device.
  • Is an internet connection needed inside the museum?
    Yes. Visitors download the audio when they scan the QR code. In rooms with no signal it is worth checking the coverage or offering a guest wi-fi network.
  • Does it work on older phones?
    It works on any phone with a camera and an up-to-date browser. Anyone who cannot scan the code can simply type the short web address.
  • Who writes the texts?
    You do — you know the collection. In the editor you paste or type the text of each stop, up to 5,000 characters, roughly three or four minutes of speech, and choose the narrating voice. No specific technical skills are required.
  • What does the voice sound like? Can you tell it is synthetic?
    They are latest-generation synthetic voices with natural intonation: you pick the one you prefer among those available. You can listen to a preview and regenerate until the result satisfies you.
  • Can I add background music?
    Yes. Each story can have a background track chosen from those available.
  • Can I correct a story after publishing it?
    Yes, at any time, and the QR codes stay the same: no reprinting, no replacing. You edit the text, regenerate the audio, and from that moment anyone scanning the code hears the new version. This is the main difference from an audio guide recorded in a studio.
  • How does translation work?

    You write the text in one language — yours — and EarStory translates it into the ones you select. The Free plan works in a single language, "Pro" covers 2 and "Max" 9. Translation is automatic.

  • How do foreign visitors choose their language?
    From the same QR code: the page opens and they pick the language they want to listen in. No separate codes per language, no extra signage.
  • What are credits?

    They measure how much audio you generate. Every time you create or regenerate a track you use credits: the count is per track and does not depend on the length of the text. The Free plan includes 1,000 a month, enough for up to ten tracks in one language; Pro 10,000, up to fifty tracks in two languages; Max 50,000, about sixty tracks in nine languages. Listening uses no credits — only generating does.

  • What happens if I run out of credits?
    Published guides stay live and visitors keep listening to them: only the generation of new audio is disabled until the monthly renewal, or until you move up to the next plan.
  • What are "listens per month"?
    The number of times visitors can play your stories: 200 a month on the Free plan and 5,000 on Pro, while Max has no limit. For a mid-sized museum, Pro covers the high season with room to spare.
  • Can I try it without paying?
    Yes. The Free plan has no expiry date and requires no credit card: you can publish a complete tour and see how visitors respond before deciding.
  • Who prints the QR codes, and where do they go?
    You generate them in EarStory and print them yourselves, even on the office printer. They can go next to the works, at the entrance to each room, or on outdoor signs.
  • How long does it take to get started?
    It depends on how many guides you want: the first story goes live in minutes, a complete ten-stop route in a couple of working days, most of which is spent writing the texts.
